What You Should Know Before Entering Poker Tournaments
Make sure you are aware of how the tournament is set up and organised. In the case of a freezeout poker tournament, the cost will only be your initial entry fee. For tournaments that allow re-buys and add-ons, make sure you know the rules of both of these options. A freeroll poker tournament then it wont cost you anything. Please note, there are a number of online poker rooms that require players to have raked a minimum amount of hands to enter the poker tournament.
When you think about rebuys, in terms of poker odds calculations, it is correct to rebuy at any stage providing that you at the same level of play in comparison to other players. This is so even if all the other competitors have a higher chip stack than you. A good rule to remember for add-ons is to consider if you are sitting with less than the average number of chips compared to other players and if by agreeing to take the add-on, you will then have an above average number of chips when compared to your opponents.
The add-on is not a good option if you have a very small stack or even a very large stack. The less it will cost for the add-on chips the better and it doesnt matter how many chips you have. Be certain that you are aware of how many other winning players there are and whether the event is played until there is a winner or ends at a certain time. The perfect approach when you get down to the last few opponents or the last few hands can lead to some plays which would be silly in any other normal hands. As a general rule, you should try make sure you check the blind/ante structure; how it moves and how often it changes during the poker tournament. The blinds typically double at fixed intervals of between 15 and 30 minutes.
Online Poker Tournaments
Online Poker tournaments are in our opinion, one of the major reasons poker has become such a main stream event and grown in popularity. Many of the poker rooms featured on this site offer many different types of tournaments on an ongoing basis with the main aim of attracting new players. There are so many tournaments at the various poker rooms, it's rather difficult to keep abreast of the latest events however, once you sign up at the room of your choice, they will no doubt keep you updated to the latest big money tournaments. Below is some rather interesting and very relevent information that you should know before starting out on your online poker tournament campaign.
How Poker Tournament Stategy is Different from Normal Ring Games?
Online Poker tournaments offer a chance to win a large sum of money for a small, and known, fee and, depending on your personal preferences, can be an amazing alternative to ring games. Once the poker tournament starts, those players who loose all their starting chips are kicked out of the event. To make sure the poker tournaments do not take too long and end within a reasonable time, the blinds are always increased at regular intervals. A players main focus in a tournament is try accumulate as many chips as possible whilst minimising the chance of loosing your chips and being eliminated.
In the Early Stages of a Poker Tournament
Try early on in the poker tournament to following the simple strategy: If the tournament is a 'freezeout' type event, most opponents will play tight in the early stages and avoid being eliminated. Some might be very aggressive, wanting to build a big stack early on in the event. You must be selective on your level of aggression in situations like this. If re-buys are permitted, the play will generally be a lot more loose. Depending on the buy-in, tons of players will be prepared to rebuy and they will play average hands aggressively trying to build a big chip stack early on in the poker tournament. Opponents that have decided they will not rebuy, wil most likley play much more conservative in the early stages. In the beginning of a tournament, the cost of the blinds will be much lower compared to the average size of the stack and will become even lower if rebuys are allowed. Generally, it is worth risking around 7% of your total chips if you want to see the flop and you have small pairs. In the case of suited connector cards and other hands like these, you have the chance to double your stack if you hit something nice on the flop. If you are an aggressive player then use the early stages to try and build a large stack of chips. You could go out the poker tournament early, but when successful it will give you a nice amount of chips to survive the first few blind increases even if the cards dont turn in your favor. If your natural game is relatively soft, then the best strategy is to try for a gradual increase of chips. Finally, in the early stages of the tournament, do not be too concerned about trying to eliminate other players. You are too far from the prize list to worry about how many players are left. It is more important to concentrate on keeping your stack in good condition
In the Middle or Late Stages of the poker tournament
These stages of the tourney the structure of the game slowly changes, so should your playing strategy. As the blinds increase they represent an increasing percentage of the average stack. Winning the blinds therefore becomes more significant and the first player into the pot will normally enter with a raise rather than a normal flat call. The opposite of this is that it nowrequires more investment to call a raise and the quality of the hand required to call a raise increases. Because players have been eliminated in previous rounds, tables will generally be less full. This, and the increasing blinds, means that unless a player is winning hands at regular intervals even a big stack can be quickly depleted. To try and prevent this from happening, players regardless of their normal style, have to consider playing with more aggression. The general strategy in the middle or late stages is to increasingly loosen the requirements for an opening raise and to tighten up the requirements for calling. Your mission should be to win, on average, the blinds once per round. Each time you win the blinds you can, in effect, survive one further round of hands.... and each round of hands you survive increases your chance of hitting a top hand and a chance to double your stack.
The Final Stage of the poker tournament
By this stage we are down to the last bunch of playersand we hope we are sitting with the biggest chip stack at the poker tournament table. Blinds have gone up so much that virtually all the players left will have stacks at or below the average size. In addition, you will be playing the game very short handed. You need at this stage to know exactly how near the prize money you are and how many chips the other players have. If you have an average or large stack the correct approach is still to be super aggressive in raising but more chilled out in calling. However when you have fewer than the average stack, it can be right to adopt a tight strategy. In most tournaments the last few players can agree to do a deal between them. There are typically 3 types of common deals that are made most of the time. Ultimately you want to win the whole stack but sometimes at the end of most poker tournaments, after playing for maybe 10 hours if its a big event, you are mentally and physically exhausted. Good luck at the poker tournament tables!! |
